You can travel to Slovenia by air to Ljubljana Jože Pučnik International Airport.

Alternatively, you can fly to any of the airports in the neighboring countries then continue by bus, train or rental car to Slovenia.

By road you can enter Slovenia from Italy, Austria, Hungary or Croatia.  Slovenia is a member of the EU, so entry from the EU Member States is rapid and easy under Schengen Agreement. If you are driving by car make sure you purchase a vignette at the border – a sticker that pays for the road taxes on country’s highways. 1. TRIESTE AIRPORT, ITALY

The Nearest International airport is Trieste in Italy, which is 1 hour drive by car via E70 to Portoroz, Slovenia. This route crosses the country border (Italy/Slovenia).

Bus:

The Ronchi dei Legionari (Trieste) airport has excellent road and motorway connections and regular public bus transport lines. At the airport, take the bus number 51 to the city of Trieste. There are several buses running every day from the station in Trieste to Slovenia. More information on timetables can be found on the website.

Taxi:

Taxis are available in front of the Arrivals entrance from 8 a.m. to midnight. Website

2. LJUBLJANA AIRPORT, SLOVENIA

The next nearest international airport is Ljubljana Joze Pucnik airport in Slovenia. Slovenia’s only airport lies about a 30-minute drive from both Ljubljana and Bled, and about 1.5-hour drive from Portorož and most other places in the country. The airport goes by three names: Ljubljana airport, Brnik or Jože Pučnik Airport.

There are numerous public transportation connections from the airport to the capital city Ljubljana. If you choose public transportation then you need to go to Ljubljana first and then choose the bus or train to Portoroz

3. FRANJO TUDJMAN AIRPORT ZAGREB, CROATIA

The next nearest international airport is Franjo Tudjman airport Zagreb in Croatia which is 2 hours 50 minutes drive by car to Portoroz. This route crosses the country border (Croatia/Slovenia).

Bus and train:

From the Zagreb airport, first take a ride towards the Zagreb main bus station (you can find the timetable here). The ride takes about 25 minutes. From Zagreb, continue your journey towards Ljubljana. You can find the timetable here. If you want to travel by train, take the tram no. 2 or 6 from the Zagreb bus station to the main railway station, from where there are several available daily railway connections to Slovenia that can be found here.

4. MARCO POLO VENICE AIRPORT, ITALY

The next nearest international airport is Marco Polo airport Venice in Italy which is 2 hours drive to Portoroz. This route crosses the country border (Italy/Slovenia).

Bus and train:

If you are travelling to Slovenia from the Venice airport (Marco Polo), you must first take an ATVO bus to Mestre railway station in Venice. Website

You can buy the ticket on the bus. At the Mestre railway station in Venice, then find a train to Trieste. For getting from Trieste to Slovenia, we recommend that you take a bus (as described above). The bus and railway stations in Trieste are only separated by a road.

Border Formalities

Slovenia is in the Schengen Area, which means that, in general, there are no checks at the border crossings with Italy, Austria and Hungary. To enter Slovenia from Croatia, it is sufficient to have a passport or an identity document, if the visit does not last more than three months. The same is with other Eu countries. 

Visas

If you need a visa to enter Slovenia, you can obtain one from the Slovenian consular mission in your country. If there is no Slovenian consular mission in your country, please contact a consular mission of any Member State of the Schengen Area.

U.S. citizens may enter Slovenia for up to 90 days for tourist or business purposes without a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least three months beyond the period of stay.
